Experienced Geologist & Former Head of Mining and Energy Department, William Searson Joins Board of Petromin.

Petromin PNG Holdings Limited is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr William (Bill) Searson C.B.E, B.Sc., as a Director of the Board of Petromin.

Petromin Board Chairman Brown Bai said Mr Searson brings to Petromin over 30 years of experience in PNG in the fields of minerals and energy development.

"Petromin is pleased that Mr Searson has chosen to join the Petromin Board.

His wealth of experience and vast knowledge of the resource potential of PNG will be of great value to the Petromin decision making process."

After graduating as PNG's first national Geologist from the University of Papua New Guinea, Mr. Searson  began his career in the 1970’s working as a government geologist undertaking mineral exploration and regional mapping work in various parts of PNG.

In 1983, he was appointed the Head of the Department of Mining and Energy where led the Department on an ambitious program of promoting the mineral and petroleum potential of PNG world wide.

In 1983 – 1990 under his stewardship, there were numerous discoveries and development of world class resource projects such as OK Tedi and the Porgera Gold Mine.

His active involvement in promoting the Papuan Basin eventually led to the discovery of commercial amounts of Oil at Kutubu and the ending of the myth that PNG only had gas.

After resigning from Government services in 1990, Mr Searson continued as an independent Consultant to mine development projects such as Lihir, Simberi, Ramu, Hidden Valley and Gold Ridge in the Solomon Islands.

He has served on various boards and was chairman of the PNG Electricity Commission Board from 1983 – 1990. During his tenure, he saw the construction of he Yonki Hydro Power Dam and the Rouna Hydroelectricty Project.

Mr Searson is a current board member of the Mineral Resource Development Corporation (MRDC).
