The Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare said at the official handover takeover ceremony in February this year that the Government would also honor the road commitment it made in the MOA. The Petromin Board has approved K500,000 for the Feasibility study as part of its contribution to the construction of the road.
The study will involve a cost benefit analysis of relevant alternative routes, possible bridge sites location, road alignment and the construction cost of the bridges as well as the capacity of the local people, the public and the private sector to implement the project.
The highway will significantly reduce operating costs of the Tolukuma Gold Mine, boost mine production and enhance exploration in the area for additional mineral resource .The mine and Goilala highway will also benefit the people of Goilala District as it will open up more opportunity for their participation in the PNG economy and provide easier access to government services and markets in Port Moresby.
The Feasiblity study will take three months to complete with final submission of the feasibility report at the end of August 2008.
